The scene
Gambol, a Gotham crime boss, has put a bounty on the Joker. The Joker turns up, takes Gambol hostage and tells him a story about how he got his scars: his father came at him with a knife and asked “Why so serious?” before cutting a smile into his face.
The line was also the film’s marketing slogan, and it became the standard caption for Joker images and for telling someone to lighten up.
